Vegas Golden Knights vs. Edmonton Oilers 2025 Second Round Series Recap

The second round series between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Edmonton Oilers came to an end after the Oilers won the series 4-1 in five games. After beating the Knights in Game 5 of the series, the Oilers advanced to the Western Conference Finals in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Oilers opened this second round series with a 4-2 regulation win on May 6, 2025 at T-Mobile Arena. After winning Game 1 of this series, the Oilers extended their series lead 2-0 after securing a 5-4 overtime Game 2 win. Down by two-games, the Knights battled it out with the Oilers in Game 3 which would have gone to overtime if #19 Reilly Smith’s shot did not bounce off Oilers’ #29 Leon Draisaitl’s stick and past #74 Skinner with 0.4 seconds left in regulation. This win for the Knights did not hinder the Oilers’ momentum as they used their Game 3 upset as fuel for their two-game sweep. The Oilers shut out the Knights 3-0 on home ice in Game 4 and were able to end the series with a 1-0 overtime shutout in Game 5 on May 24, 2025. This last overtime between the Knights and Oilers during the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs ultimately helped the Oilers to punch their ticket into the Western Conference Finals.
The Knights’ points leader during this second round series was #9 Jack Eichel (5A) who recorded 5 points by the end of this series. In regards to goaltending, #33 Adin Hill was the Knights’ starter and ended the playoffs with a record of 1-4-0 and a 0.893 SV% after he saved 133 out of 149 shots on goal during this second round matchup against the Oilers.
The Oilers’ points leaders were #97 C. Connor McDavid (5A) and #29 Leon Draisaitl (2G, 1A) who both ended this second round series with 5 points. #90 Corey Perry led the Oilers with the most goals scored during the second round (3G). In regards to goaltending, #30 Calvin Pickard initially started out in net for the Oilers and secured a 0.878 SV% after he saved a total of 43 out of 49 shots on goal in Game 1 and Game 2 of the series. When #30 Pickard sustained an injury which put him out of this second round series, #74 Stuart Skinner took over and ended with a 0.944 SV% after saving 67 out of 71 shots on goal. #74 Skinner’s back-to-back shutouts in the last two-games of the series helped to secure the Oilers spot in the Western Conference Finals.
In regards to stats, the Knights played a more physical game (196 hits vs. 171 hits) and found more success on the man-advantage (17 average PP% vs. 10 average PP%). On the other hand, the Oilers had the advantage when it came to goals scored (16G, 10G), puck possession (149 shots vs. 120 shots), and average faceoff wins (54.16% vs. 45.84%).
Although the Knights tried their best to stay in the game with the impressive goaltending performance from #33 Adin Hill, the Oilers’ overall ability to capitalize on their scoring chances and to maintain puck possession greatly benefited them in their 4-1 second round series win.
