Game Recap

After a tough Game 1 loss, the Knights entered this game with energy which helped them to get on the board first with a power play goal scored by #95 Victor Olofsson (1-0). Although the Oilers had a couple great chances to cut their goal deficit, the Oilers remained scoreless as the Knights’ goaltender, #33 Adin Hill, helped maintain their 1-0 lead going into the second period.

It wasn’t until the the latter half of the second period when the Oilers broke through the 1-0 standstill with a game-tying goal scored by #96 Jake Walman (1-1). Shortly after scoring the game-tying goal, #92 Vasily Podkolzin extended the Oilers’ lead and made it a 2-1 game. #25 Darnell Nurse kept the Oilers goal-scoring momentum and extended their lead by two-goals after his snap shot slipped past Knights’ #33 Hill (3-1). Oilers’ goaltender, #30 Calvin Pickard, remained solid in net throughout most of the second period and only let one-goal slip past him. The goal which cut the Knights’ deficit down to one-goal was a shot tipped in by #71 William Karlsson with two minutes left in the period. This last goal of the second period made the teams go into the last twenty-minutes of regulation 3-2 in the Oilers’ favor.

The Oilers continued their momentum with a goal scored by #91 Evander Kane within the first two minutes of the third period (4-2). This two-goal lead for the Oilers was shortly cut down to one-goal after Knights’ #95 Olofsson scored a power play goal a couple minutes after #91 Kane’s goal to make it a 4-3 game. The Knights continued to persevere and tied the game, 4-4, when #7 Alex Pietrangelo’s wrist shot slipped past Oilers’#30 Pickard midway through the third period. The game remained tied and the first overtime in this series between the Knights and Oilers was forced despite both teams having great chances to break the standstill.

The first three-quarters of first OT remained scoreless despite the Oilers having an opportunity on the man-advantage and the Knights having a couple scoring chances. Although the Oilers found themselves struggling earlier on, they were able to muster an overtime win when #29 Leon Draisaitl scored the game-winning goal in the last five minutes of the period. The in net performance by #30 Pickard and game winning goal scored by #29 Draisaitl helped secure the Oilers’ 5-4 win and their 2-0 series lead.
