Game Recap

Rogers Place erupted with excitement when the Oilers opened up Game 3 with two goals scored by #90 Corey Perry early in the first period. #90 Perry made it a one-goal game when he snapped the puck past Knights' goaltender, #33 Adin Hill, after waiting for #33 Hill to go down and open up enough space slip the puck blocker side (1-0). Seconds after successfully killing off a penalty, the Oilers found themselves on the man-advantage and were able to extend their lead by two-goals after #90 Perry tipped the puck into the back of the net fifty seconds into their power play opportunity (2-0). The Oilers’ momentum did not hinder the Knights as they answered back late in the period with two goals which tied the game, 2-2. The first Knights’ goal was scored by #10 Nicolas Roy after he was able to capitalize on a bouncing puck which Oilers’ goaltender, #74 Stuart Skinner, lost in the midst of all the chaos in front of the net. Fifty-four seconds later, #19 Reilly Smith scored the game-tying goal for the Knights after he split the D, froze #74 Skinner, and scored a backhanded goal. This goal by the Knights was the last goal scored in the first period which made it a tied game going into the second period (2-2).

Both teams had great chances to break the 2-2 standstill but found themselves struggling to slip any of their chances past Knights’ #33 Hill and Oilers’ #74 Skinner as they kept most of the second period scoreless. The penalty kill units of both teams also maintained their 100% success rate in the second period as they were able to kill off each other’s man-advantages. It wasn’t until the final three minutes of the second period when Knights’ #71 William Karlsson scored the goal which broke the tie and gained the Knights’ first lead of this game (3-2). The Knights were able to hold onto their 3-2 lead going into the third period of the game.

The Oilers made a commendable push in throughout the third period which paid off in the final three minutes of regulation as #97 C. Connor McDavid’s game-tying goal banked the puck off Knights #3 Brayden McNabb’s skate and into the back of the net (3-3). Although it seemed like the second overtime of this series was guaranteed, the Knights were able to score with 0.4 seconds left in regulation after #19 Smith’s shot bounced off Oilers’ #29 Leon Draisaitl’s stick and past #74 Skinner. This thrilling 4-3 win for the Knights forced Game 5 in this series.
