The Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers will face one another in the Stanley Cup Finals for a second year in a row. This series will kick off on the Oilers’ home ice at Rogers Place on June 4, 2025 at 5:00 PM PST. The Panthers have dominated and won the two 2024-25 regular season games played against the Oilers. Although the Panthers have had the upper hand, the resilience of the Oilers will be what fuels them in this series.  


The Panthers enter the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals with confidence and momentum from their 5-3 win against the Carolina Hurricanes. On the other hand, the Oilers enter the playoffs with momentum from their four-game winning streak which closed out their Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Stars.


Florida Panthers Road to the Playoffs

Before the playoffs began, the Florida Panthers were the third team in the Atlantic Division to clinch their spot in the playoffs after the Toronto Maple Leafs’ shutout the Columbus Blue Jackets (5-0) and the New Jersey Devils shutout the New York Rangers (4-0) on April 5, 2025. The Panthers ended the regular season with 98 points, a 47-31-4 season record, a 23.71 PP%, an 80.51 PK% and 8 shutouts recorded. The team’s regular season points and goals leader was #13 Sam Reinhart who ended the regular season with 81 points (39G, 42A). #16 C. Aleksander Barkov led the Panthers with the most assists recorded by the end of the regular season after ending with 51 assists. In regards to goaltending, their regular season star goaltender is #72 Sergei Bobrovsky who ended the regular season with a 33-19-2 record, a 2.44 GAA, a 0.906 SV%, and 5 shutouts. 


Florida Panthers Journey to the Stanley Cup Finals 

The Panthers postseason has proved why they are the reigning Stanley Cup champions as they won the Battle of Florida and wiped the floor in their Game 7 matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Panthers started the first round strong with back-to-back regulation wins. Although the Tampa Bay Lighting answered back after getting shutout (2-0) in Game 2 of this first round series, their last push was not enough to overcome the Panthers’ two-game sweep which helped them win the series 4-1. 


The Panthers found themselves struggling in the beginning of the second round as the Leafs put up a good fight and won Game 1 and Game 2. Down by two in the series, the Panthers answered back with a three-game winning streak which included an OT win in Game 3, a 2-0 shutout in Game 4, and a regulation win in Game 5. With their series on the line, the Leafs forced Game 7 after they shutout the Panthers, 2-0, in Game 6. The Panthers used their upset from Game 6 as fuel for their 6-1 regulation win against the Leafs and closed out the series 4-3 in seven games. 


The Eastern Conference Final (ECF) started out with a strong start for the Panthers as they won the ECF opener with a 5-2 Game 1 win on May 20, 2025. They continued their momentum with a 5-0 shutout in Game 2 and found themselves within one-win from securing their spot in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs after their 6-2 Game 3 win. Down by three-games, the Canes made a huge comeback with a 3-0 shutout in Game 4 of the series. After their upset in Game 4, the Panthers came back with vengeance as they gained momentum during the second and third period of Game 5 which ended with a 5-3 victory on May 28, 2025. The Panthers were named the 2025 Eastern Conference Champions for the third year in a row after their near sweep in the ECF. 


Florida Panthers Postseason Stats and Points Leaders

After their first round, second round, and Eastern Conference Final run, the Panthers’ points and assists leader in the postseason is #16 C. Aleksander Barkov who currently has 17 points recorded (6G, 11A). #9 Sam Bennett leads the Panthers with the most assists recorded during the postseason (10A). In regards to goaltending, #72 Sergei Bobrovsky currently has a 12-5-0 record, three shutouts, a 2.11 GAA, and a 0.912 SV% after his impressive performances in net during the postseason.


Edmonton Oilers Road to the Playoffs

Before entering the playoffs, the Edmonton Oilers were the third team in the Pacific Division to clinch their spot in the playoffs after their 4-2 win against the San Jose Sharks on April 11, 2025. The Oilers ended the regular season with 101 points, a 48-29-5 season record, a 24.76 PP%, a 78.35 PK%, and 3 shutouts. #29 Leon Draisaitl led the team with the most points and goals scored by the end of the regular season as he recorded 106 points (52G, 54A). #97 Connor McDavid led the team with the most assists recorded as he ended with 74 assists. In regards to goaltending, #74 Stuart Skinner made up the first half of the Oilers’ goaltending tandem and ended the regular season with a 26-18-4 record, a 2.81 GAA, a 0.896 SV%, and 3 shutouts. #30 Calvin Pickard made up the second half of the tandem and ended the regular season with a 22-10-1 season record, a 2.71 GAA, and a 0.900 SV%.


Edmonton Oilers Journey to the Stanley Cup Finals

The Oilers’ round one series against the LA Kings started out with a strong start for the Kings as they won the opener with a 6-5 win on April 21, 2025 which was followed up by a 6-2 victory in Game 2 of the series. The Kings lost the lead and their momentum in the series after the Oilers persevered and took control over the remainder of the series. The Oilers’ momentum started with an impressive 7-4 win in Game 3 which was followed up by a series tying 4-3 overtime win in Game 4. After a 3-1 win in Game 5, the Oilers found themselves within one win to advance onto the next round in the playoffs. After a back and forth Game 6, the Oilers were able to seal the deal with a 6-4 win on May 1, 2025. 


The Oilers’ momentum continued into the second round as they opened the series with a 4-2 regulation win on May 6, 2025 at T-Mobile Arena against the Vegas Golden Knights. After winning Game 1 of this series, the Oilers extended their series lead 2-0 after securing a 5-4 overtime Game 2 win. Down by two-games, the Knights battled it out with the Oilers in Game 3 which would have gone to overtime if #19  Reilly Smith’s shot did not bounce off Oilers’ #29 Leon Draisaitl’s stick and past #74 Skinner with 0.4 seconds left in regulation. This win for the Knights did not hinder the Oilers’ momentum as they used their Game 3 upset as fuel for their two-game sweep. The Oilers shut out the Knights 3-0 on home ice in Game 4 and were able to end the series with a 1-0 overtime shutout in Game 5 on May 24, 2025. This last overtime between the Knights and Oilers during the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs ultimately helped the Oilers to punch their ticket into the Western Conference Finals.


The Oilers had a tough start in the Western Conference Final (WCF) which started out with a strong start for the Dallas Stars as they won the WCF opener with a 6-3 Game 1 win on May 21, 2025. After a rough loss for the Oilers, they regrouped and swept the rest of the series with a four-game winning streak. This winning streak started with a 3-0 shutout in Game 2 and was followed up by a 6-1 win in Game 3. The Oilers continued their momentum with a 4-1 win in Game 4 and closed out the series on May 29, 2025 with a back and forth Game 5 which ended 6-3 in the Oilers favor. After their four-game winning streak, the Oilers were named the 2025 Western Conference Champions for a second year in a row after their near sweep in the WCF.


Edmonton Oilers Postseason Stats and Points Leaders

After their first round, second round, and Western Conference Final run, the Oilers’ points and assists leader in the postseason is #97 C. Connor McDavid who currently has 24 points recorded (5G, 19A). #29 Leon Draisaitl leads the Oilers with the most goals recorded during the postseason (7A). In regards to goaltending, #74 Stuart Skinner currently has a 5-4-0 record, three shutouts, a 2.47 GAA, and a 0.910 SV% after taking over for #30 Calvin Pickard when he sustained an injury during the second round series against the Vegas Golden Knights. Prior to his injury, #30 Pickard had a 7-6-0 record, a 2.84 GAA, and a 0.888 SV%


Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers

Going into this matchup, the Oilers’ have a 30.0% overall power play success rate which is higher compared to the Panthers’ 23.2% overall power play success rate. Oilers currently have a 67.0% penalty killing success rate which is significantly lower compared to the Panthers’ 87.9% penalty killing success rate. When they played against one another during the regular season, the Panthers outscored (10G vs. 8G), outshot (64 SOG vs. 57 SOG), and played a more physical game (65 hits vs. 36 hits) against the Oilers. Despite their tough losses, the Oilers had a higher power play (30 PP% vs. 10 PP%) and penalty kill success rate (90 PK% vs. 80 PK%) compared to the Panthers.


The Oilers, despite their previous challenges against the Panthers, go into this rematch in the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals with vengeance in order to win the cup for the first time in thirty-four years. On the other hand, the Panthers go into the finals with the utmost confidence and determination to stay the reigning champions.
