Edmonton Oilers vs. Dallas Stars 2025 Western Conference Final Recap

The Western Conference Final (WCF) between the Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers came to an end after the Oilers won the series 4-1 in five games. After beating the Stars in Game 5 of the WCF, the Oilers are scheduled to face the Florida Panthers in the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals.


The series started out with a strong start for the Stars as they won the WCF opener with a 6-3 Game 1 win on May 21, 2025. After a rough loss for the Oilers, they regrouped and swept the rest of the series with a four-game winning streak. This winning streak started with a 3-0 shutout in Game 2 and was followed up by a 6-1 win in Game 3. The Oilers continued their momentum with a 4-1 win in Game 4 and closed out the series on May 29, 2025 with a back and forth Game 5 which ended 6-3 in the Oilers favor. After their four-game winning streak, the Oilers were named the 2025 Western Conference Champions for a second year in a row after their near sweep in the WCF. 


The Oilers’ points leader were #97 C. Connor McDavid (3G, 4A) and #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2G, 5A) who both ended with 7 points recorded by the end of the WCF against the Stars. #29 Leon Draisaitl led the Oilers with the most assists during the WCF as he recorded 6A. In regards to goaltending, #74 Stuart Skinner ended the WCF with a 4-1-0 record and a 0.917 SV% after he saved 121 out of 132 shots on goal. 


The Stars’ points and goals leader was #21 Jason Robertson (3G, 1A) who ended the WCF with 4 points recorded. #96 Mikko Rantanen led the Stars with the most assists during the WCF as he recorded 3A against the Oilers. The Starter goaltender for the Stars was #29 Jake Oettinger who ended with a 0.838 SV% after he saved 93 out of 111 shots on goal before #1 Casey DeSmith took over in Game 5. After taking over, #1 DeSmith closed out the series with a 0.850 SV% after he saved 17 out of 20 shots on goal. Overall, the Stars’ goaltending tandem ended the WCF with a 1-4-0 record and a 0.833 SV% after saving a total of 110 out of 132 shots on goal. 


In regards to stats, the Oilers outscored the Stars (22G vs. 11G) despite both teams ending the WCF with 132 SOG. The Oilers did play a more physical game (240 hits vs. 161 hits) and found more success with their power play (37.5 PP% vs. 35.7 PP%) and penalty kill success rate (65.3 PK% vs. 62.5 PK%). The Stars did find more success with their average faceoff win success rate in the five games that were played in the WCF (56.1% vs. 43.9%). The Oilers’ WCF win heavily relied on their goaltending and ability to capitalize on their scoring chances. 


The Edmonton Oilers displayed how they can overcome the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final and why they deserve to face the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals for a second year in a row. Although the Oilers have back-to-back Clarence S. Campbell Bowl wins, they are eager to win the Stanley Cup for the first time in thirty-four years.
