This battle started off relatively quiet in regards to goal scoring after an intense goaltending battle between Boston Fleet’s #31 Aerin Frankel and Ottawa Charges’ #33 Gwyneth Philips. It wasn’t until the final two minutes of the period when the Ottawa Charge broke the scoreless standstill and made it a 1-0 game with a power play goal scored by #5 Jocelyne Larocque. The first period ended in the Ottawa Charge’s favor despite both teams having a few chances on the man-advantage and the Boston Fleet outshooting the Ottawa Charge (8 SOG vs. 5 SOG).
After a rough start, the Boston Fleet’s offense came to life during the last three minutes of the second period which resulted in #11 Alina Müller scoring the game-tying goal (1-1) and #47 Jamie Lee Rattray giving the Boston Fleet their first lead of this series (2-1). Once again, each team had a chance on the power play which remained scoreless due to each team’s impressive penalty kill units and stellar goaltending. The Boston Fleet also ended the second period with a slight advantage when it came to maintaining puck possession (8 SOG vs. 6 SOG).
Although the Ottawa Charge put up a good fight in the last period of regulation, the Boston Fleet remained unfazed and secured the first win of this series with a final score of 2-1. This victory for the Boston Fleet would not have been possible without the impressive in net performance by #31 Aerin Frankel who saved a total of 17 out of 18 shots on goal. This loss for the Ottawa Charge does not take away from the commendable goaltending performance of #33 Gwyneth Philips who saved a total of 26 out of 28 shots on goal by the end of this game.
