Game Recap
Going into Game 2, the Jets used the upset from their second round opener loss as fuel for their determination and hunger to win throughout the first period of this game. This fuel ultimately helped them to strike first with a power play goal tipped in by #13 Gabriel Vilardi early in the period (1-0). The Jets continued their momentum and extended their lead by two-goals a little over three minutes after the opener goal when #27 Nikolaj Ehlers’ wrist shot banked off Stars’ #23 Esa Lindell’s skate and slipped past Stars’ goaltender #29 Jake Oettinger (2-0). The Stars remained scoreless despite testing the Jets’ goaltender, #37 Connor Hellebuyck, multiple times in the latter half of the period. The Jets ability to maintain puck possession and the great goaltending performance by #37 Hellebuyck helped them to enter the second period with a 2-0 lead.
The action picked up again in the latter half of the second period when #17 C. Adam Lowry extended the Jets’ lead by three-goals and made it a 3-0 game. With nineteen seconds left in the period, the Jets found themselves with the man-advantage which carried on into the beginning of the third period. The Stars had a set of great chances to cut their goal deficit, however, #37 Hellebuyck kept the Stars’ scoreless going into the third period.
The third period remained scoreless after the great goaltending performances of Stars’ #29 Jake Oettinger and Jets’ #37 Hellebuyck. With time winding down in the latter half of the period, the Stars pulled #29 Oettinger twice in an attempt to get on the board with the man-advantage. This decision did not work in the Stars’ favor as #27 Ehlers scored on the empty-net and extended the Jets' lead 4-0. Although the Stars were given a power play opportunity in the final minute, their last push was not enough to hinder Jets’ #37 Hellebuyck’s 4-0 shutout.
