Game Recap
After their unfortunate Game 4 loss, the Panthers came back with vengeance in Game 5 of the 2025 Stanley Cup series. #63 Brad Marchand opened Game 5 with a breakaway goal midway through the first period which gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Panthers took advantage of the Oilers’ struggles and ended up extending their lead with a late goal scored by #9 Sam Bennett (2-0). Panthers’ goaltender, #72 Sergei Bobrovsky, was able to hold off the Oilers from scoring any additional goals and kept it a 2-0 game going into the second period.
Both teams had their chances to break the standstill with a couple power play opportunities but were unable to get past each others’ penalty kill units. In regards to goaltending, Oilers’ #30 Calvin Pickard did a great job keeping the Panthers scoreless during the second period while #72 Bobrovsky maintained the Panthers’ 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless second period and a failed power play, the Panthers extended their lead, 3-0, with another breakaway goal scored by #63 Marchand. Two minutes and fourteen seconds after the Panthers scored, #97 C. Connor McDavid scored the first Oilers’ goal of the game which ultimately cut their deficit by two-goals (3-1). The Panthers answered back with a goal scored by #17 Sam Reinheart regained their three-goal lead (4-1). Down by three-goals, the Oilers decided to pull #30 Pickard so they would have an extra attacker on the ice. The Oilers’ decision initially worked in their favor as #90 Corey Perry scored a goal while on the man-advantage (4-2). With two minutes left in regulation, #27 Eetu Luostarinen secured the Panthers’ 5-2 win with an empty net goal. The Panthers are now one-win away from being the 2025 Stanley Cup Champions after gaining a 3-2 series lead with their Game 5 win.
