Game Recap

The Panthers kicked off Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final with a power play goal scored by #9 Sam Bennett two minutes into the first period (1-0). The Oilers quickly answered back and made the score 1-1 with a game-tying goal scored by #91 Evander Kane after an unfortunate giveaway by the Panthers. #2 Evan Bouchard extended the Oilers’ lead, 2-1, after he scored on the Panthers’ goaltender, #72 Sergei Bobrovsky, while playing 4-on-4 hockey midway through the first period. Down by one-goal, the Panthers answered back and tied the game, 2-2, with a goal scored by #3 Seth Jones. During the latter half of the period, #29 Leon Draisaitl’s power play goal, scored with a minute and thirty-six seconds left on their man-advantage, helped the Oilers to regain their one-goal lead (3-2). With time winding down, the Panthers found themselves going into the second period with forty-one seconds remaining on the man-advantage after successfully killing off an Oilers man-advantage.

Oilers’ goaltender, #74 Stuart Skinner, and their penalty kill unit started the second period strong by killing off the Panthers’ power play opportunity and nearly scoring a shorthanded goal on #72 Bobrovsky. The Panthers ability to shake off their upset and maintain puck possession during the first half of the period ultimately led them to tying the game, 3-3, with a goal scored by #7 Dmitry Kulikov. This momentum did not stop as #63 Brad Marchand extended the Panthers lead, 4-3, with a shorthanded breakaway goal scored on #74 Skinner. The game remained stagnant up until the final two minutes of the period when the Panthers’ power play turned into 4-on-4 hockey for forty-four seconds and then into an Oilers power play which carried into the last period of regulation.

Despite having a great start during the last period of regulation, the Panthers’ efforts to close out Game 2 fell short during the final minutes of the period. The Oilers' decision to pull out #72 Skinner and have an extra attacker on the ice greatly benefited them as it led to #90 Corey Perry scoring the game-tying goal with eighteen seconds remaining in the third period. This last push by the Oilers in regulation forced the teams into overtime with a score of 4-4.

The impressive saves by Oilers’ #74 Skinner and Panthers’ #72 Bobrovsky kept 1OT scoreless despite both teams having multiple chances to take Game 2. The score remained stagnant until eight minutes and five seconds into 2OT when #63 Marchand secured the Panthers’ 5-4 win with his second breakaway goal of the night. After a hard-fought battle, the Panthers have tied the series, 1-1, with the help of #63 Marchands’ game-winning goal in 2OT and the remarkable goaltending performance by #72 Bobrovsky.
