Game 1 | Bakersfield Roughnecks 6, San Diego Sabers 5

The Bakersfield Roughnecks started the first period strong with three back-to-back goals within the first six minutes of the period. Despite a goalie change for the San Diego Sabers from Mikhail Saratovtsev to Parker Lewis, this did not stop the Roughnecks from scoring an additional goal to make it 4-0 within the first half of the period. Sabers’, Matthew Matsuda, took advantage of their two power plays of the first period and not only put the Sabers on the board but also made it a two-goal game (4-2).

Sam Bailey’s goal at 2 minutes and 54 seconds into the second period made it a one-goal game for the Sabers (4-3). Matthew Matsuda recorded his first hat-trick of the 2024-2025 regular season after scoring the game-tying goal a few minutes after Sam Bailey’s goal (4-4). Sabers’ finally had the lead in the game after Knut Hornkvist scored a power play goal (5-4), however, the Roughnecks tied the game 1 minute and 7 seconds later (5-5).

Unfortunately, the Sabers were unable to answer back during the third period; the Roughnecks scored one last goal which made the final score 6-5 in the Roughnecks’ favor. Liam Luther was able to secure the win for the Bakersfield Roughnecks after saving Sabers’ 29 out of 34 shots on goal. Mikhail Saratovtsev, who started off in net for the Sabers, saved a total of 4 out of 7 shots on goal before Parker Lewis took over for the remainder of the game after the first 5 minutes of the first period. Sabers’ Parker Lewis saved a total of 36 out of 39 shots on goal by the end of the game.

After a close battle in Game 1 of the two-game series, the Sabers fall short and end their five-game winning streak. This loss does not take away from Sabers’ Matthew Matsuda’s efforts and first hat-trick recorded during this game.

Game 2 | San Diego Sabers 5, Bakersfield Roughnecks 3

San Diego Sabers Captain, Liam Krupcyznski, opened up this game and put the team on the board first (1-0) a little over midway through the first period. The Bakersfield Roughnecks were able to momentarily make it a 2-1 game after scoring during the first half of the second period. Even though the Roughnecks were given an opportunity to extend their lead, they were not able to take advantage of their power play. Instead, Sabers’ C. Krupcyznski was able to score a short handed goal with 58 seconds left in the period to make it a tied game (2-2). Sabers’ Briar Dickson opened up the third period which momentarily made it a one-goal game until the Roughnecks answered back to tie the game once again (3-3). This did not stop the Sabers’ momentum as Dickson would shortly score the game winning goal and C. Krupcyznski scored the insurance goal to make the final score 5-3. The Sabers ended up with 50 shots on goal by the end of the game. Parker Lewis, the Sabers’ goaltender, was able to secure the win for the San Diego Sabers after saving 48-51 shots on goal. Sabers’ Captain, Liam Krupcyznski, recorded his second hat-trick of the 2024-2025 regular season after scoring three goals during this game.

Although the Sabers lost their five-game winning streak, they made a huge comeback in Game 2 of their two-game series and have an opportunity to start a new winning streak. The Sabers remain in third place in the USPHL Pacific Division standings with 26 points. Despite a tough start in the series, their perseverance and determination is what keeps the team motivated to win.
