The San Diego Sabers traveled to Valley Childrens Ice Center where they faced the Bakersfield Roughnecks in a two-game series this week. After a very close Game 1 which ended with a 4-3 overtime loss for the Sabers, they used the loss as fuel for their Game 2 of the series. The Sabers closed out Game 2 with an impressive 8-1 win and C. Liam Krupcyznski recording his 5th hat-trick of the regular season!

Game 1 | Bakersfield Roughnecks 4, San Diego Sabers 3
Sabers’ Briar Dickson kicked off Game 1 with a goal scored early in the first period followed by Caleb Murray extending their lead with twenty-one seconds left in the period (2-0). The Bakersfield Roughnecks gained momentum and responded with two back-to-back goals that were scored two minutes into the second period (2-2). C. Liam Krupcyznski helped the Sabers regain their one-goal lead a few minutes after the Roughnecks’ game tying goal (3-2). After what seemed like a Sabers’ win secured, the Bakersfield Roughnecks were able to capitalize on their last power play opportunity with fifty-eight seconds left in the third period and forced the teams into overtime (3-3). With a little over two minutes left in overtime, the Bakersfield Roughnecks were able to secure a Game 1 win with a final score of 4-3. After a very close game with the Sabers being outshot by one goal (52 SOG vs. 53 SOG) and Viktor Pasztor saving 49 out of 53 shots on goal, the team was able to secure one point in this game which currently helps them in the race to the playoffs.

Game 2 | San Diego Sabers 8, Bakersfield Roughnecks 1
The Sabers took control and dominated the first period with 4 unanswered goals which were scored by Aidan Cosgrove (1 G), Briar Dickson (1 G), and Sam Bailey (2 G). Although the Bakersfield Roughnecks were able to score on their successful power play attempt, this did not stop the Sabers’ momentum as they extended their lead two with goals scored by C. Liam Krupcyznski and Weston English (6-1). Sabers’ Captain, Liam Krupcyznski, recorded his 5th hat-trick of the 2024-2025 regular season after closing out the third period with 2 additional unanswered goals (8-1). Viktor Pasztor was able to secure the Sabers’ 8-1 win after saving 44 out of the 45 shots on goal that he faced during this game.
The Sabers end this two-game series with three points which keeps the team in 5th place of the USPHL Pacific Division standing with 43 points. The team trails Henderson Force who currently sits in 4th place with 51 PTS. The Sabers are not completely out of the running, however, their chances of overtaking Henderson Force is going to be an uphill battle with their upcoming matchups. This makes the team even more determined and eager to win their upcoming two-game series.
