San Diego Sabers vs. Lake Tahoe Lakers
The Sabers will take on the Lake Tahoe Lakers at South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena this week. The Sabers and Lakers are split 1-1 in regards to wins during previous meetings during the regular season. Both teams are eager for a win as the Sabers continue to stay in the race to the playoffs while the Lakers hope to close out their regular season on a high note.
In their two-game series this past weekend, the Sabers were swept by the Bakersfield Roughnecks and the Fresno Monsters. The Lake Tahoe Lakers are on a two-game winning streak after their three-game series against Ontario Jr. Reign. After a tough week for the Sabers and successful week for the Lakers, both teams are even more determined to win this weekend.
The San Diego Sabers are currently in 5th place with 43 points in the Pacific standings and have a season record of 21-16-1-0. Their leading scorers are Knut Hornkvist who has 84 points this season and Liam Krupcyznski who currently has 79 points.
The Lake Tahoe Lakers are currently in 1st place with 63 points in the Pacific standings and have a season record of 30-10-2-1. Their leading scorers are Brian Erte who currently has 84 points and Jose-Jasmir Guseff who currently has 70 points this season.
Going into this matchup, the San Diego Sabers have a 17.61% overall power play success rate which is lower compared to the Lake Tahoe Lakers’ 23.35% power play success rate. The Lake Tahoe Lakers have an 84.19% overall penalty killing percentage which is higher than the Sabers’ 80.41% penalty killing percentage success rate. In previous matchups, the Lakers did have more shots on goal (103 SOG vs 62 SOG), however, they did find difficulty in securing the win in Game 1 against SDS despite having control of the puck for the majority of the game. Both teams have struggled on their power play opportunities when playing against one another due to their strong penalty killing success rates. Overall, it will come down to goaltending, penalty killing, and who can capitalize while having puck possession throughout the game.
The Sabers go into this week’s matchups determined to secure a winning streak as their chances of making it to the playoffs depends on this week’s three-game series.
