The San Diego Sabers faced an unfortunate sweep this weekend against the Bakersfield Roughnecks and the Fresno Monsters. These losses do not take away from Knut Hornkvist recording his third hat-trick of the 2024-2025 regular season and the team’s commendable efforts in the close games this past week.

Game 1 | Bakersfield Roughnecks 6, San Diego Sabers 5

The Bakersfield Roughnecks dominated the beginning of the game with 6 goals scored before the end of the first period. Sabers’ Knut Hornkvist was able to answer back to one of the 6 goals and make it a 6-1 game going into the second period. The Sabers were able to regain momentum and took over the second period with four unanswered goals to make it a 6-5 game, still in the Bakersfield Roughnecks' favor. The four Sabers goals were scored by Caleb Murray (1 G), Briar Dickson (1 G), and Knut Hornkvist (2 G). Although Knut Hornkvist’s third hat-trick of the regular season greatly contributed to the Sabers’ comeback in this game, the Sabers were unable to overtake the Bakersfield Roughnecks who won with a final score of 6-5 after a scoreless third period. This loss does not take away from the efforts of goaltenders Viktor Pasztor and Mikhail Saratovtsev. Pasztor saved a total of 7 out of 11 shots on goal before Saratovtsev took over midway through the first period. Saratovtsev saved 21 out of 23 shots on goal by the end of the third period. Despite a tough loss, the Sabers’ efforts to make a comeback and stay in the game were commendable.

Game 2 | Fresno Monsters 3, San Diego Sabers 2

The Fresno Monsters took control over the first and second period of the game with a 2-0 lead that was left unanswered until the third period. After the Fresno Monsters extended their lead to 3-0, Sabers’ Caleb Murray answered back and put the team on the board early in the third period (3-1). With 23 seconds left of the period, Sabers’  Knut Hornkvist was able to make it a one-goal game (3-2). The Sabers’ last push was not enough to tie the game and force overtime. Despite a tough loss, Viktor Pasztor’s efforts in net for the San Diego Sabers was noteworthy as he saved a total of 45 out of 48 shots on goal by the end of the game.

After a tough two-game series, the Sabers are in a desperate need of a winning streak in order to stay in the race to the playoffs. Their upcoming three-game series against the Lake Tahoe Lakers will play a big role in the deciding factor as to whether they are out of the playoffs or not. With their chances narrowing, the Sabers are even more determined going into this week’s matchups.
