The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers will face one another in the Western Conference Finals (WCF) of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This series will kick off on the Stars’ home ice at American Airlines Center and will be a series of redemption for the Stars after their unfortunate loss against the Oilers in the 2024 WCF. For the Oilers, this finals puts them one step closer to finding their redemption in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Stars have dominated the Oilers and won two out of the three games that they played against one another during the 2024-25 regular season. Although the Stars have had the upperhand, the resilience of the Oilers during the postseason will be what fuels them in this series.

The Oilers enter the WCF with confidence and momentum from their back-to-back shutouts in their second round series against the Vegas Golden Knights. Although the Stars do not enter the WCF with a winning streak, they do enter the WCF with momentum from their overtime win in Game 6 of their series against the Winnipeg Jets.

The Stars’ points leader in the postseason is #96 Mikko Rantanen (9G, 10A) who currently has 19 points recorded which is made up of 9 goals and 10 assists. In regards to goaltending, #29 Jake Oettinger currently has an 8-5-0 record, a 2.47 GAA, and a 0.919 SV% after his first round and second round victories.

The Oilers’ points and assists leader is #97 C. Connor McDavid who currently has 17 points which is made up of 3 goals and 14 assists. #29 Leon Draisaitl leads the Oilers with the most goals scored during the postseason with 5 goals recorded. In regards to goaltending, #74 Stuart Skinner took over in net after #30 Calvin Pickard sustained an injury, and ended with a 0.944 SV% after saving 67 out of 71 shots on goal during the second round series against the Knights.

Going into this matchup, the Oilers enter the WCF with a 25% power play success rate which is higher compared to Stars’ 21.1% power play success rate. The Stars enter the WCF with an 86.0% penalty killing success rate which is significantly higher compared to the Oilers’ 66.7% penalty killing success rate. When they played against one another during the regular season, the Stars outscored (12G vs. 9G) and found more success on their average power play success rate (66.7 PP% vs. 16.7 PP%) despite being outshot (73 SOG vs. 102 SOG) and having a lower average faceoff win rate (46.10% vs. 53.90%) compared to the Oilers.

The Stars enter this rematch with vengeance as they are determined to not repeat history and to be the team that advances to the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals. On the other hand, the Oilers go into these match-ups with experience and the utmost confidence to remain on top.
