Oct. 4-5, 2024: San Diego Sabers Split the Two-Game Series Against the Fresno Monsters

The San Diego Sabers faced the Fresno Monsters for the first time in the 2024-2025 regular season on Friday, October 4, 2024 and Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Carlsbad Icetown. Game 1 of the two-game series resulted in a 7-2 win which went in favor of the Fresno Monsters. Game 2 resulted in a 4-2 win in favor of the San Diego Sabers. With the Sabers’ Game 2 win, they go into this weekend’s games with confidence and the hunger to keep winning.

Game 1: Fresno Monsters 7, San Diego Sabers 2
The San Diego Sabers’ win streak came to an end after a Game 1 loss in the two-game series against the Fresno Monsters who completely took control over the first and second period of the game. They scored 1 goal early in the second period and 4 additional goals in the second period. Down by 4 goals, Sabers’ Sammy Albano was able to cut the deficit and momentarily make it a three-goal game early in the third period (4-1). Despite great efforts to make a comeback, the Sabers were only able to answer back on one out of two goals that Fresno Monsters’ Jonathan Heidenberg Andersen scored in the third period which extended their team’s lead and completed his first hat-trick of the season. San Diego Sabers’ Aidan Cosgrove scored the last goal of the game which ended with a final score of 7-2 in the Fresno Monsters’ favor. Viktor Pasztor was in net for the San Diego Sabers and saved a total of 16 out of 21 shots on goal before Mikhail Saratovtsev took over in the third period. Mikhail Saratovtsev saved a total of 7 out of 9 shots on goal. Overall, despite the struggles, the sabers did try their best during this game.

Game 2: San Diego Sabers 4, Fresno Monsters 2
The San Diego Sabers started Game 2 strong with a dominant performance in the first period which ended with Sabers’ Sam Bailey and Knut Hornkvist scoring a total of three goals. Fresno Monsters were able to answer back once before the first period ended 3-1 in the Sabers’ favor. Liam Krupcyznski opened up the second period with a goal 1 minute and 7 seconds in which would extend the Sabers’ lead by three goals. The Fresno Monsters answered back with 49 seconds left in the second period which made the score 4-2. After a scoreless third period, Sabers’ goaltender, Mikhail Saratovtsev, was able to remain strong and secure the win for the San Diego Sabers after saving 36 out of 38 shots on goal.
Although the San Diego Sabers’ three-game win streak unfortunately ended in Game 1 of this two-game series, they were able to make a huge comeback in Game 2 and can go into next week’s games on a high note when they face the Ventura Vikings and the Ontario Jr. Reign.
